Why virtualise servers with Proxmox VE?

Proxmox VE runs several servers as virtual machines on the same physical host: less hardware, full backups of each VM, fast restores and an open source platform with no per-core licence cost.

What is a high-availability Proxmox cluster?

Several Proxmox VE servers (three nodes, or two nodes with a quorum witness) work together and share or replicate VM storage. If one fails, the HA manager automatically restarts its virtual machines on the other nodes: downtime is limited to a few minutes, with no human intervention. Maintenance is also done without downtime thanks to live migration.

What does Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) bring?

PBS backs up your virtual machines incrementally, deduplicated and encrypted. Backups are automatically verified, can be replicated to a second site, and a full VM can be restored in minutes.

Windows Server or Ubuntu: which one?

Windows Server is the natural choice for Active Directory, central management of Windows workstations and some business software. Ubuntu Server is ideal for web hosting (Apache, PHP, MySQL): stable, lightweight and licence-free. Both work very well together.

What is Active Directory for?

Active Directory centralises accounts, passwords and access rights. With Group Policy (GPO), it applies the same security and configuration rules to every workstation.
